More than two decades after Janet Jackson’s infamous Super Bowl halftime performance, her former wardrobe designer is offering a different account of what happened. Wayne Scot Lukas claims the moment that sparked a national controversy was not a wardrobe malfunction, but a planned reveal that went wrong because the production team failed to follow instructions.
Lukas shared his version of events during a November 3 appearance on TMZ Live, where he discussed Justin Timberlake’s upcoming Apple TV docuseries. The reported project is expected to revisit some of the biggest controversies surrounding the singer’s career, including the 2004 performance.

According to Lukas, the original wardrobe concept was actually supposed to expose Jackson’s backside. He even claimed to have a G-string that was intended for the moment. However, he said the plan changed just days before Super Bowl XXXVIII, and the team decided to reveal Jackson’s breast instead.
The designer insists the outfit was made to accommodate the reveal. The problem, he alleges, was that the broadcast was supposed to cut to black immediately afterward. Instead, the cameras continued showing the performance, sending the now-famous moment to millions of television viewers.

Jackson has previously described the incident as an unintended wardrobe malfunction, while Timberlake issued a public apology after the broadcast. Neither performer has confirmed Lukas’ latest claims, leaving questions about what was actually planned.
Lukas also spoke about the personal and professional consequences he says followed the controversy. He claims the incident damaged his career and expressed frustration that Timberlake never reached out to apologize to him directly. Although he is not asking for an apology now, he believes the singer should use his upcoming documentary to explain what happened.

Timberlake’s reported four-part series, directed by Fisher Stevens, is expected to arrive in December. In addition to the Super Bowl controversy, the project is reportedly set to explore his past relationship with Britney Spears. Spears’ 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, included details about their relationship, though she reportedly declined an invitation to participate in the series.

The fallout from the halftime show had lasting consequences. Jackson faced intense public criticism, while Timberlake continued his music career. The performance also triggered a Federal Communications Commission investigation and a $550,000 fine against CBS, which was later overturned.
Jackson, meanwhile, has continued to celebrate her musical legacy, including the 40th anniversary of her album Control.
