Chris Rock is taking a closer look at his past and acknowledging how his personal choices affected his marriage to Malaak Compton-Rock.
The comedian recently opened up about the relationship in a new interview with GQ for its 2026 Men of the Year issue. During the conversation, Rock admitted that he made several mistakes during their 18 years together, including infidelity, not listening and failing to treat his wife with kindness.

“I was not a great husband,” the 61-year-old said.
Rock also discussed his excessive pornography use, revealing that it was another issue that played a role in the breakdown of their relationship. He said he has since stopped watching it and has not returned to the habit in five or six years.
The Everybody Hates Chris star did not try to excuse his behavior, acknowledging that his actions were nothing to celebrate.
“It’s not anything I’m proud of, but it’s something I had to go through,” he said.

Looking back, Rock compared his experiences to a superhero who gets carried away while discovering his abilities. He explained that some people have to make mistakes and experience consequences before realizing they are not invincible.
“I tested my powers. I definitely realized I wasn’t God or anywhere near him, and I was severely humbled, as I should have been,” he told the magazine.
Rock and Compton-Rock married in 1996 and share two daughters, Lola and Zahra. After nearly two decades together, the couple announced their separation in December 2014. Their divorce was finalized in 2016.

At the time of their split, Compton-Rock described the decision as one they reached after much contemplation. Despite the end of their marriage, the former couple has continued to share important family moments. In May, they reunited to celebrate their daughter Zahra’s graduation from the University of Southern California.

Following the divorce, Rock dated actress Megalyn Echikunwoke for several years. He was also linked to Carmen Ejogo and Lake Bell before beginning a relationship with his current girlfriend, Simone Henault, in March.
While Rock has continued his career in comedy and film, his latest comments offer a more personal look at the mistakes he says forced him to reconsider how he approached relationships.
