Amar’e Stoudemire is stepping into a new chapter of his life, trading his basketball uniform for a career in law enforcement.
The former New York Knicks and Miami Heat player graduated from the Miami-Dade Police Academy on Wednesday, Oct. 14, after months of training. According to Miami Dade College, Stoudemire completed the Basic Law Enforcement Academy through its School of Justice and will join the Miami-Dade County school police department.

The announcement marks a major career change for the 43-year-old, who spent years competing at the highest level of professional basketball. But Stoudemire says becoming a police officer is something he has wanted to do since childhood.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated, he recalled being asked what he wanted to be when he grew up during elementary school career day. His answer was already clear.
“My initial response was a police officer,” Stoudemire said.

The career choice also has deep roots in his family. He explained that several relatives have worked in law enforcement, including an uncle who served as a captain, another relative who was a deputy and a cousin who is also a captain. Stoudemire added that his sister is currently attending the police academy.
Although he spent years developing the endurance and discipline required to play in the NBA, Stoudemire said police training presented its own physical challenges. The academy included classroom instruction and demanding training exercises, including more long-distance running than he was accustomed to during his basketball career.
He explained that NBA players typically run shorter distances during games, while police academy training requires more sustained mileage.
The decision to pursue law enforcement initially raised concerns for his wife because of the risks officers face. Stoudemire acknowledged those concerns but emphasized the importance of proper training, understanding department procedures and prioritizing officer safety.

His graduation comes during a year of major milestones. In August, Stoudemire was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, recognizing his impact on the sport. During his NBA career, he earned six All-Star selections and was named Rookie of the Year in 2003. He played five seasons with the Knicks from 2010 to 2015 and also suited up for the Miami Heat.

Stoudemire has also faced personal challenges away from basketball. In December 2022, he was arrested following an incident involving one of his teenage daughters. Misdemeanor battery charges were later dropped in January 2023.
Now, with his academy training complete, Stoudemire is moving forward with a profession he says he envisioned long before becoming an NBA star.
