Deion Sanders had high hopes for his son, Shedeur Sanders, going into the 2025 NFL Draft. At one point, the Colorado Buffaloes coach boldly predicted Shedeur would be a top-five pick. But when draft night rolled around, things took an unexpected turn. Shedeur didn’t just fall outside the top five—he wasn’t picked at all in the first round.

Despite the disappointing outcome, Deion handled it with grace. Breaking his silence the following morning, he shared a powerful message of faith. “My bible says God uses the foolish things to confound the wise and he chose the weak things of the world that he may put to shame the strong. Please know God ain’t done and God is just really getting started. Enjoy this lesson and stop stressing,” Deion wrote on social media.

Shedeur echoed a similar sentiment, staying positive even after the fall. “Of course, we didn’t expect this, but I feel like with God, anything is possible. I don’t think this happened for no reason,” he said. “This is fuel to the fire. Tomorrow’s a new day. We’re going to be happy regardless. Legendary.”
Though Shedeur wasn’t taken on the first day, he eventually found a home with the Cleveland Browns, who selected him in the fifth round. But questions about why such a promising quarterback slid so far down the board have only continued to grow louder.
Some insight into the situation came from NFL insider Todd McShay. On his podcast, McShay revealed that Shedeur’s pre-draft meetings might have hurt his stock. Particularly, a visit with the New York Giants reportedly went poorly. According to McShay, during a private session with Giants head coach Brian Daboll, Shedeur struggled with a play installation exercise and didn’t seem prepared. When Daboll challenged him on it, Shedeur reportedly didn’t take it well, leaving a bad impression.

“There were two top-10 teams with quarterback needs that didn’t come away feeling great after interviews with Shedeur,” McShay added. Although nothing disrespectful was said, there was a sense that Sanders wasn’t very concerned about making a strong impression.
When asked about the report, Coach Daboll kept it professional, simply stating, “We had good meetings with all the guys who came in,” and pivoted the conversation back to players already on the Giants roster. General manager Joe Schoen also shut down further talk about Shedeur.

The Giants’ draft picks made their stance clear. They selected linebacker Abdul Carter with the No. 3 pick and quarterback Jaxson Dart later in the first round at No. 25, officially passing on Sanders twice. Veteran quarterback Russell Wilson is expected to start for the Giants this season, with Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito also in the quarterback room.
As Shedeur begins his professional journey in Cleveland, the story of his unexpected fall remains a hot topic. Many believe Deion Sanders has been encouraged by those around the NFL to stay quiet and not stir the pot further. Still, both father and son have made it clear: setbacks are just setups for an even bigger comeback.
